Abstract:

Originals (21 p. and 2 envelopes) and typed transcripts (19 p.) of letters to a friend in Ohio; the first letter is obviously sent to Larwill's father. Duck recounts the hardships of his trip by train, mule, and foot across the isthmus of Panama to board the steam ship Sonora, an outbreak of cholera, and the ship running aground 40 miles south of San Francisco. Discusses his plans and mentions his brother Oliver's return to Ohio, after successfully working as a tin and coppersmith, and eventually buying the blacksmith and hardware store in Weaverville, Trinity Co. Describes in detail an 1854 lynching in Iowa Hill, Placer Co., and the 1855 bank failures prevalent in San Francisco and throughout Calif. Letter of June 1855 discusses his decision to move to the city, and the position he has secured in a store in Sacramento.
Letter of Aug. 28, 1856 written by Charles Zeitler, a mutual friend, who advises Larwill against coming to Calif. in search of fortunes, and discusses the situations of other mutual friends from Wooster, Ohio.
